A whetstone asks you to hold an angle by feel for ten minutes. This kit holds it for you. The knife lies on a magnetic guide set to 15 or 20 degrees, and you roll the wheel along the edge; the angle cannot drift because the guide will not let it. Wooden body, diamond and ceramic discs, leather strop, and a kitchen drawer is enough storage.

Two preset angles cover a home block: the 15 degree side for thin slicing knives, the 20 degree side for the everyday chef knife and the one you take to a squash. The magnet holds the blade steady, so the edge you grind at the heel matches the edge at the tip.
The diamond disc does the cutting on an edge that has gone dull enough to slide off tomato skin. The ceramic disc follows and refines what the diamond left behind. Two passes, two discs, and the knife bites again before prep is finished.
A leather strop ships with the kit, which is the step most sharpening sets leave out. Run the edge along it after the ceramic and the burr comes away. It is also the between-sharpening tool, for the week when a knife is not dull yet but no longer keen.
A kitchen drawer, or out on the counter near the block. The wooden roller is quiet in a way electric sharpeners are not, and nothing here needs an outlet or a stone soaking in water. Roller, magnetic guide, discs and strop stay together as one kit instead of scattering through the drawer.
