Ten panels, your arithmetic
One tall column or two shorter ones. The extra top panel is what makes the second rack possible: without it you build a nine-tier tower, with it you build a pair of complete racks. Redistribute the stackable sections later and both heights change again to suit the room.

One rack by the door, one in the closet
Split the set and the halves do different jobs. A short rack at the entryway holds the pairs in rotation while the taller one keeps the rest in a closet. Keep them together instead and you have a single shoe area. Same parts, two very different floor plans.

Open shelves, flat panels
Nothing closes, so the everyday pairs are visible from the doorway: low-top sneakers, casual shoes, flats and slides, each with a place of its own. The plastic panels give a continuous surface under a sole, and a damp cloth takes the week off them.
